TRIALBRIEFS.COM
Pearl Street Publishing
was
founded by Sherry Seiber and Tom Nussbaum. Sherry has been a criminal defense
attorney in Colorado since 1972. Tom has been active in Colorado politics since 1970, when
he moved to the state. The Briefs series was a separate division of Pearl
Street Publishing since the inception. Originally envisioned as "hard copy"
briefs similar in appearance to legal briefs but aimed at the thoughtful non-lawyer, the
concept evolved to an online publication, Trialbriefs.com, which analyzes cases and
issues in the news.
One of the first online issues
of Trialbriefs.com focused on how justice and politics blend or collide in an
election year. Trialbriefs.com commenced coverage with the United States Supreme
Court decision on "partial birth abortion" in the case of Stenberg v Carhart.(July
2000). It concluded with election coverage culminating with the United States Supreme
decision on the Presidential election itself in Bush v Gore.(December 2000). It
seemed during the time span from the election in November to December 12 of 2000
that the public's responsibility and right to be informed about legal cases and issues
could not be greater in our lifetime. September 11, 2001 changed all that.
Trialbriefs.com was launched as an ongoing online publication on October
26,2001 when President Bush signed The Patriot Act of 2001. Vigilance is required by all
citizens to see that our fundamental Constitutional rights are protected as we defend
ourselves against terrorism. Trialbriefs.com intends to analyze the Act from the
perspective of a criminal defense attorney dedicated to protecting the civil liberties of
individuals and of an American well aware of the need to protect our nation against
terrorism. |
First Edition:
October 26, 2001
Trialbriefs.com was conceived as an online publication which analyzes
legal cases and issues of interest to the public. It has evolved along with the Internet
to include links to the sources of our laws and court decisions as the legislatures,
judiciary and elective officials throughout the country have developed excellent websites.
We believe that the Internet has not only revolutionized the citizen's ability to be
informed immediately and directly about our government's actions, but also provides us
with the ability to communicate our views to elected officials as they consider and debate
policy. We have posted special editions on Trialbriefs.com for some time. The last one was
a Trialbrief on the Presidential Election of 2000. As of October 29, 2001 we are an
ongoing publication. We will post past Trialbriefs, and our mission statement on this
website as time allows.
These are extraordinary times as we as a nation and individuals must do all that is
necessary to defend against terrorist acts whether International or Domestic while
preserving the fundamental civil liberties which are the foundation of our
democracy. We will focus first on those laws, executive orders, and judicial
decisions which are a direct response to the Attacks of September 11, 2001. The Patriot Act of 2001 is a fitting
starting point. We will analyze each provision of this act on a regular basis. We have
begun our coverage with the summary of the Act and a link to the Library of Congress
Website which posts the entire Act as well as the debate and votes. |
